“Art is a way for me to more deeply experience and appreciate the world around me and the people I encounter. It is also a way for me to stay centered in, as well as contemplate, an earth experiencing so many challenges. A major theme in my art is portrait and the figure. As a past family physician, I had the opportunity to appreciate and explore the human spirit and the intricacies of the human body. Now, after transitioning to art full time, not surprisingly I am drawn to the human form as well as the stories of those I paint. I love seeing the soul and spirit of the person emerge in a work as it progresses. Another theme in my work is the cultures and places I have visited. Images, patterns and customs that I have experienced abroad are always finding there way into my work. And in the summer months I paint plein air. Favorite spots are the coast of Freeport and Monhegan Island. I paint in oil and gouache and my studio is located in Portland, Maine.” –Amy
