Imagine a place where children attend music lessons after school, where there are concerts and theatrical performances from community groups and touring artists in the evenings, and where artists display their work and learn from masters. Imagine a multi-use arts and cultural center that serves the community and diversifies and bolsters the local economy.
The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Freeport (ACAF) is working to create Meetinghouse Arts, an arts and cultural center in downtown Freeport!
First Parish Church of Freeport’s historic building has long been a gathering place for the whole community. As tenants at the church, ACAF will make necessary changes to the sanctuary level at 40 Main Street in order to create performance, gallery, learning, and meeting space. We’ve been discussing these changes with the Church, and we have a concept that meets the requirements for the uses we propose while preserving the historic character of the interior and maintaining the Church’s ability to hold services there.
Recognizing the importance of arts and cultural activity to the vitality of the downtown and the community at large, the Town of Freeport has committed $133,000 in Destination Freeport TIF funds toward the renovations. The Town’s investment will give strength to our applications to foundations and requests to significant donors, putting us on the path to a sustainable, affordable facility.
We still have a long way to go before this dream is a reality, but we have taken huge steps forward. We are working with contractors and others to finalize plans for the renovations, we are refining our business plan to ensure sustainability, and we have launched a comprehensive campaign to raise funds to complete the renovations and set the center up for success. We will keep you posted on our progress here!
